Oh Thank Heaven We Made it through Week 11!!!!!!!!

Week 11 In a Nutshell

So this week I feel like I was more prepared and less rushed to complete all the video assignments.  I hope it shows in my work.  At first I was kind of dreading doing video work, because I knew it would take a lot of time to edit our assignments compared to all the previous genres we have done over the past 10 weeks. This being the second week of our video assignments I feel that I am finally able to have some ease with these assignments because I am finally adjusted to the programs we have to use to complete these assignments.  This week has still a little more time-consuming, but I feel that I was able to put more sweat and hard work into these assignments.  The week prior I drove to Indiana a 9 hr trip there and 9 hr trip back in one weekend, so my work was rushed and the quality wasn’t the greatest.  I will say no more 9 hr drives.  This week I enjoyed creating a couple Daily Creates, Watched the Movie “The Day the Earth Stood Still”  and answered a few of Vanessa’s many questions.  Here is my work below:

3 Daily Creates:

I was continuing the GIF story here when I noticed that Wonder woman was acting outside her norm by spinning excessively.

These were just a few of the many songs I would listen to while escaping the apocalypse.  Mostly 2000’s music mostly rock, I feel like this music from this time would get my super hyped to take out some zombies.

For all those people that want to tell someone off.  Thanks Winston Churchill for the inspiration.  I felt the little kid got the point across in this tweet.

Watch a Movie Make a movie-

I chose the movie “The Day the Earth Stood Still” as my second movie that I watched.  As I have never seen this movie before I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened.  This movie was created back in 1951 but some of the techniques they used to film this, were ahead of their time.

After watching this movie I see that nothing has changed.  Shoot first, ask questions later.  The townspeople had shot the alien from a distant planet before he could get out what he wanted to say, typical Americans.  Just like in the movie the world super powers are making atomic bombs threatening to use them against each other.  These same topics are still relevant today, nations at odds with each other.  It took someone such as this alien to make the world see that their hatred for one another would only lead to disaster.  Overall a good movie.

I did the “Supercut It” assignment to go with the movie,  I ended up using the word “ship or spaceship” because I felt it was the most used word within the whole movie.  I felt that we could not forget the real question.  Why was the spaceship here?  Here is my clip below:

Assignment: 10 Apocalyptic Questions

I chose the 5 questions I felt I could best answer out of the ten that Vanessa provided.  I used the program OpenShot to splice and dice and input my videos in where they needed to be.  I think I was making this a little harder than it should have been at the beginning.  I was not only writing down a small script to keep my thoughts together but I was also writing down the stop and start times of each question and the times throughout the video that I wanted to eventually cut.  This process took a little longer than I had expected but once I got the ball rolling it was on downhill from there. Here is my Q & A session with Vanessa I hope you enjoy:

My Six Stars I chose to complete

I would Walk 500 Miles-  I did the 3 star assignment Where do your shoes take you in a day?  In this assignment you had to tell a story using a video of only your shoes!  Well I guess i misread the instructions because I definitely didn’t have socks on for part of the video, other parts of the clip I was wearing my socks.  But regardless I showed a video of where my feet took me that day.  Initially I was at home here in Fredericksburg.  I then traveled to Fort Lee hence the video of my feet driving.  I then arrived at a baby shower hence me actually wearing dressy clothes.  Lastly after a long day which felt like 500 miles of walking I relaxed at my sisters at Fort Lee.  Here is my video below:

Let Me Tell You About my Apocalyptic Airwave Friends- I did the 4 star assignment “This is My Story.”  I decided to tell my story using notecards.   I told the story of what Mufasa and I are doing these days, and that we sorely miss or friends from the Barn.  It has been two weeks since we presented our story Apocalyptic Airwave a story of survival to others.  After we told our story Mufasa and I moved on from the barn trying to find other survivors.  I made this video to let my friends from the barn know that they are dearly missed.  Here is my video below:

Creating 2 Daily Creates

My First Daily Create

My first daily create, that I shared with the class is I wanted the DS106 class to create or use a pre-existing GIF to describe their experience within the DS 106 class.  I chose this GIF to use as my example, because through out this DS 106 we have had to think outside the box and have had to be creative in our end products that we produce.

My Second Daily Create I Made

What is the animal saying if they could talk??  I’ve wondered what our pets or animals are actually saying to us when they bark or meow.  I decided to make this a daily create because I am curious to see what others think their pet/animal is actually saying.

Question of the Week

You hear on the radio that the End has started. What do you do first?

First off I hope that XM Radio warns me of this shit!!!  I mean I do pay my monthly subscription fee, at least they can do his help a brotha out.  Well the first thing I do is pack necessities, like Oreos lots and lots of Oreos.  But seriously I would pack up food whether it be can or perishable I would pack it all.  I would have wife and kids on a tight schedule and would pack clothing enough to change into from time to time. And of course blankets it may be cold where we are heading.  After we finally get car packed head to the first gas station try to beat the mad house there luckily I only live 2 miles away from multiple gas stations and get far away from the end as possible.  If I am not able to get out of my area or trying to get out would be to dangerous than we would bunker down in our house than and hopefully be able to survive through the initial chaos.

Count to Ten and do it All Over Again!!!!!!

This week was probably one of the hardest weeks yet for me.  I won’t say it’s hard due to the work load, but last Thursday a good family friend had passed away.  Due to this family friend being so close to our family it was only right for me to get in my car and drive the 9 hrs 30 minutes to Indiana for the viewing/funeral this past weekend.  Due to the driving and due to the chaos that took place because of said situation I was unable to get anything done nor find anytime to do this weeks workload in peace in quiet.  Plus it is kind of hard to edit videos and watch clips when your going 70 mph down the Interstate.  So here I am on Monday catching up on all the work after a very long weekend.  I would say that I didn’t get to dive in and be creative as I normally am due to my time constraints over this past weekends events.  I feel that my work is ok but I felt that it was a little rushed to ensure that it was all done.  I look forward to next weeks video assignments so that way I can hopefully dive in a little deeper and make slightly better products than I did this week.  Here are the things I had created below:

I decided to do th the daily create Fantasy Plants.   My fantasy plant is a flying Hibiscus flower that flies to the bees and then eats the bees after being pollinated.  It’s a roughly life for a bee I must say.

What can I say I love to travel to the busy streets of New York.  I love how the buildings all have a story to tell, with the wind blowing off of them.

My Media Assignments

I decided to do the college collage assignment.  I decided to do this assignment as my college experiences haven’t been the same as your typical college student in the past few years.  In my slide show I incorporated my family in most of my pictures because they have been the driving force to get me to the end.  While I have been attending UMW over the past year and half almost two years, I have got out of the Army, had a son, and been able to expand my family here in Virginia.  The pictures in my end product seemed to flip when I uploaded it through YouTube, but I left them this way because it is different and shows character.

I chose to do this media assignment to show the background story of Mufasa and how he came to be the protective wolf that Carson Gordon had rescued.  This clip shows Mufasa’s transformation from a pup to an adult, I really loved the sound clip I found for Mufasa’s photo opp, I hope you do as well.

Reading Movies Blog Post

Here is the clip for my video essay for the movie “The night of the walking Dead”, I tried to point out some of the tips that I had read in Ebert’s article about how to read a movie.  I had never seen this movie up until this point and I quite enjoyed it.  I highly recommend it!!
What question would you like to ask the class?
One how was your week, and what programs other than the ones stated in the resources page did you guys use to construct your videos.

How to better Watch movies by knowing the Details.

How to Read A movie well what I learned from reding this article:

I read the article by Robert Ebert: How to Read a Movie.  I never knew the details of how a movie is put together or how it was shot.  After reading this article my eyes are opened to some of the techniques that are used.  When we see a character on the right side of an individual they seem to be portrayed in a more dominant stance than that of the character on the left side.  When we look at the movement of characters in a scene Ebert states that when characters are moving to the right this is scene as being positive, but moving to the left is seen as negative. A point of view above a character’s eye line reduces him; below the eye line, enhances him. Extreme high angle shots make characters into pawns; low angles make them into gods. Brighter areas tend to be dominant over darker areas.  I never knew that this much attention to detail goes into formulating the perfect shot in a movie or show.  After reading this article I know have a better understanding of what all goes into getting that perfect shot, and how to set a scene.  I am no expert on this topic by any means now, but I can now watch a movie or show with open eyes and use some of these ideas to pick a part different scenes.

I ending up watching four videos about four different aspects of how films are shot.  The four aspects I decided to watch are located below.

Match Cut

Tarantino from Below

The Shining – Zooms

Kubrick // One-Point Perspective

The First Video I watched was over the perspective “match cut”, I see this in movies all the time but never knew this was what it was called.  In this perspective a certain object or person in a movie is seen one way and then instantly seen another way.  I love Forest Gump I seen after the fact that match cuts were used quite frequently to flashback instantly from Old Gump to Young Gump.  I have watched Grease as well but never knew this flash of a scene was considered a Match Cut.

The second perspective I watched was the Tarantino scenes from below perspective.  I guess after looking at this perspective, I have watched more Tarantino movies that I thought I have.  When they are filming these scenes from below I imagine a person laying on their back on like a skateboard or something rolling with a walking individual.  This view from below I feel gives an intimidation factor, makes the character/characters seem more important.

The third perspective I watched was zooms, I see this in movies all the time, but didn’t realize that zooms were used as frequently as I had thought.  By zooming in it brings the main focus of a certain character into focus.  It brings all the attention to that person or scenario showing it’s importance within that scene.

The last perspective I learned about/ watched was one-shot perspectives in Stanley Kubrick’s films.  I don’t know what it is about the two little girls at the end of the hall, but NO THANK YOU!!!.  I love how the attention to detail to a focal point in a scene draws the viewer in.

My Video Essay

So the video I decided to do my video essay over was the movie Night of the Living Dead.  I tried to incorporate some of Ebert’s critiques of different techniques used within the clip to describe what was going on.  Here is my video essay located below:

World War Z the Revised Cover

So I decided to revised my book cover for the book World War Z  here is my original book cover I had created using GIMP.  If I recall right this was my first picture/project used on GIMP so I was learning as I went and this was the best I could do at the time. I was happy with it but felt it was kind of plain compared to others book covers.  So I figured this was the best work of mine to revise. Here is my original book cover below:

I decided to revise my book cover by making my book cover an interactive one.  I use GIF’s all the time but I have never made one, so I decided for this new revision of my book cover I would bring the book cover to life, not only using a GIPHY for the background picture, but also a GIPHY for the Text.  Here is my revised work below.  I know you can’t really put this on a hard back book, but maybe this could be used on the digital version of the book.

Animated GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

A crazy Radio night, Girls Guide and The Eagle Report aka (Joey Buckets)!!!!

So I decided to be wild tonight and I stayed up for not just one, but two radio broadcasts on ds106Radio, look at me go!!!! Here are my reflections for “Girls Guide to/for/through the Apocalypse” and “The Eagle Report” stated below:

“Girl’s Guide to/for/through the Apocalypse”

I really enjoyed the format of the whole show.  I like how they broke down places to eat, since Mickey D’s and Chick Fil A won’t be open.  The way they did a question and answer segment on Midwives Advice with their listeners was really creative.  When doing the radio show I wouldn’t of thought to do something like this I felt that they knocked this out of the park.  I missed about 5-10 minutes of the radio show due to putting my kids to sleep.  What I did hear was very upbeat and a good show all around.  The editing of background sounds, transitions and music choice made this show well worth the listen.

The Eagle Report

I liked their reporting style, and how they transitioned to different reporters throughout the radio show.  I feel that there was a strong undertone for chicken references such as Joey Buckets, and Young Gravy the show was good about informing me about %@#@!nucleitide how ever you spell it, but more than anything it made me hungry with all their KFC names for their characters.  Note to self eat before listening to radio broadcasts.  I like how they used actual commercials we hear from day to day on their radio show.  Even though the apocalypse is happening, this doesn’t mean you are allowed to have dandriff in your hair, get yourself some Head and Shoulders.  Overall I feel this group did a good job with their editing and transitioning from one reporter to the next.

Learning to be better at Design!!!!

After listening to the talk  by Paula Scher I’ve come to conclusion that you do not need to be a design professional to be successful in design.  I felt like at the beginning she was talking directly to me.  She said that you do not need to know what you are doing to create something wonderful.  Well I sure hope I can create something wonderful with the beginners knowledge I currently have when approaching our design assignments.  When listening to her talk she seemed to focus on working outside the box, this is where your best work will occur.   I loved how she hated a certain font, and she did everything in her power to never use it ever again.   If we step outside our boundaries or our limitations when it comes to design we will end up with better end products.

During David Carson’s I was really amused with all the different pictures of design he had taken over his many years, and his interpretation of them.  He shows that each image has a story to tell and I love how he showed this in the writing of “No Parking” on two different garage doors.  That these doors paint a picture, and each viewer will have a different interpretation.

Contrasting the two talks I feel that Scher’s was more serious and detailed more of her accomplishments, Carson’s was more off the cuff and more entertaining showing design he found in the world.  But I think both talks show us that even though we might not be good at design with some work we can all be design artists only if you love and enjoy doing it.  That design is everywhere and it can have a big impact on those who view it.

I’ve enjoyed using Canva and by going through these tutorials I realize I haven’t even scratched the surface in what I can do within this website. I choose to take the (Art of Alignment, Using Canva Grids, Harnessing Hierarchy, Canva Shortcuts Part 1, Designing with Shapes, Starting with Scale and Brilliant Backgrounds tutorials.)   I chose these tutorials to try to help me enhance my future products.  We were instructed to choose at least 7 tutorials that we were unfamiliar with, I will probably try out most of the tutorials due to my inexperience with this website and inexperience with design concepts. Between Canva and GIMP I definitely have a few extra tools in the toolbox to use.

My Radio Transmission From Cape Town, Africa!!!! Frequency 2156

As a digital story I feel this website Frequency 2156  nailed the digital story aspect.  The multiple different audio files from numerous amounts of individuals help to paint a picture of what is going on within the individuals and what is going on around them.  Each audio file from different parts of the world show a different story going on, each file is not the same and I think this is what makes this type of storytelling different than others I have listened to or seen before.  I feel the crowd sourcing audio helps bring a different aspect to this genre.  People are able to be creative and have fun with this, because they are not following any structure in their audio works.  The only thing I would do different with this story is to make the uploads of audio not take so long, other than that I wouldn’t change a thing.  The visuals are amazing, the multi layers of the website keep the viewer’s attention, and the aspect of crowd-sourcing for the audio is an awesome idea to make it more realistic.

I tried to upload my voice recording to the Frequency 2156 website but was unsuccessful in doing so.  After bring it to Professor Burtis attention she stated to go ahead and record a voice transmission.  So I used audacity to merge my sounds together that I had gotten from the Free Sound Website .  I used two different sounds in the making of my clip, bunker sounds with a constant drip in the background and bombs hitting the bunker in the distance.  I think I am somewhat getting the hang of audacity and I quite enjoyed making my transmission from Cape Town Africa, in which my transmission was meant to reach others who were survivors like me.  As you can tell from my transmission my survival may depend on if I can find other survivors or not.

Taking forever to load!!!!

So when I did my contribution to the Frequency 2156 site, I had to record my clip multiple times.  The first few times I didn’t like the way I came across, but once I got my clip where I wanted it I played around with the settings to give it the apocalyptic feel.  Out of all things to use to record my voice for the clip, I ended up using my XBOX headphones to give my voice a little bit better quality of audio.  I did use a script of sorts that I created in Microsoft Word so that way I knew what I was going to say, so I didn’t fumble and bumble my audio clip.  Overall I enjoyed being creative with my audio file being able to contribute to the overall story being told.

My Xbox Headset worked wonders!!!!

The Road And La Jetee TWO totally different Movies!!!!!!

La Jetee

My first thought of La Jetee after the first couple of minutes was that I had seen a movie like this before.  A movie where people have their dreams manipulated.  The movie I instantly thought of was the movie Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio.  But this is besides the point.  Throughout the early parts of the clip I seen that a war had taken place and I thought the individuals in the cots were orginally sick and or prisoners of war.  But to my amazement they were being used as test subjects by the frankensteinish  scientists who all looked the part with their freaky glasses. The subjects in the earlier part had gone mad or died due to extreme measures of the experiments being inflicted onto them.  I was really confused on what the scientists wanted the participant to find through his dreams.  We know through the film that he goes into his past meeting up with a familiar face of a woman, he maybe once knew.  I was really hoping that he would stay in this dream state and that they would live happily ever after.  But this was not the case, they kept waking him from his dreams and then would increase the dosage of medicine to make his dreams more vivid.  I feel that the museum was a set up for his future death.   I chose this picture because it was the moment I thought the man was going to escape through his dream state but instead he dies which frustrated me because he never made it to the woman who he wanted to get to the whole time.

I was really amazed  toward the end of how the producer of the clip showed movement with quick action shots, showing the man running toward the woman.  I feel the clip did a good job throughout the man’s dreams of showing the couple moving throughout the city, with out any actual movements just different still shots.  I didn’t know what to think when they film went silent was confused on what was going on at these moments, but I feel the producer of this clip over all did a good job of showing a movie with only pictures.

I ended up watching the movie The Road because it was a movie I hadn’t watched before and one I didn’t have to pay for.   When watching the movie I noticed that they did a lot of close ups of the characters but also showed depth of what was going on in the backgrounds, such as trees falling or the fires burning.  The movie skips back and forth between the Father and his son and the man and his wife.  In these shots of the man and his wife and then with their child it looks like the destruction had already started to take place due to their prepping of cans and other supplies.   In this movie every man is out for themselves.  Individuals are starving and will do whatever it takes to survive stealing, pilaging, and even cannibalism. The movie shows that humanity is lost. These things in the movie are considered to be normal now, if they plan on surviving. While watching this movie I couldn’t imagine trying to survive these times with my family of four.  I seen where families had taken the easy way out, rather than being killed by others it would suck for it to come to that.

I chose this GIF from the movie because it is at this point in a fathers eyes he must do everything in his power to protect his children.  The father is looking down the barrel of his gun at the person that wants to try and take his child.  In this scene the kid gets snatched up and the father instinctively shoots the man trying to take his son, which would of ate him like a snack.

I feel that this movie was pretty good based on the circumstances at hand.  I feel like we take for granted what we currently have and the lives we live that this could possibly be us in these circumstances. Towards the end we see that humanity isn’t completely lost on people that a complete stranger took in the kid. Overall a good movie definitely glad I watched it.

Short Story Reflections

Tupac Shakur and the End of the World

I just read  and completed both of my short stories.  The first story I read was the story by Sandra McDonald “Tupac Shakur and the End of the World”.  At first glance I thought this short story was going to be about Tupac being a zombie and leading a horde of zombie rappers including Biggie into taking over the world as zombies.  After reading the first couple paragraphs I found out quickly that this was not the case.  That the main character Susan was a book writer, who wrote a book over the life of Tupac.  That she had moved to Brooklyn from Florida to get better insight of Pac’s life.

This short story takes place on Interstate 95, with 5 individuals all heading southbound trying to survive what is known as the “Creep” another name for becoming a zombie.  I think the author did a good job giving a slight back story and skill set of each character.  Looking at the Titles of the short stories this title drew my eye in only because I used to listen to Tupac back when he was still alive, who am I fooling I have a Tupac Pandora channel on my playlist.  The author tells about how individuals get the “Creep” another word for turning in a statue or zombie.  She does a good job of describing how the body reacts to this virus.  The virus she speaks of is like a fast moving virus like the plague, that it enters the body through scraps, bruises, or extreme bruises.  I was expecting a horde of zombies to attack these people but instead these people were only effected if they were clumsy and got hurt.  I would of definitely had the creep, as I am a very clumsy.  The creep took over like arthritis a symptom I would of never thought used in a post apocalyptic scene but it worked for this story.  People effected by the Creep had their bodies shut down, and would turn into statues in a sense. It was hard to move or stay limber.  Most of the main characters die off, and we see Susan the main character get the “Creep”

which I didn’t expect to happen but it did.  I see everything coming full circle as she is now at the foot of a Tupac statue a person she had wrote about in here book.  Jack tries to console her, but in the end by the wording of the last sentence or two I think Jumping Jack pulled the trigger to end Susan’s life that how I interpreted it.  Overall a good read .

There Will Come Soft Rain

There Will Come Soft Rain by Ray Bradbury was the 2nd short story I read.  I was really amazed that this book was written in the 1950’s, a time where there was not automated technology as there is today.  For being written in the 50’s the author Ray Bradbury was pretty spot on with the description of todays and future technology.  Maybe this guy like Marty McFly traveled to the future and knew something we didn’t.  The author used the back drop of a nucleur blast painting a picture of what happened to the family, the house and the surrounding areas.  I think this was written in a time when nucleur war was at an all time high, where people where on edge, due to the potential of a nucleur holacaust shortly after WWII.  I feel that the author painted a detailed schedule of how the house worked day in and day out.  My main question is where is the food still coming from after all the days/months/years, the family has not been there.  I thought for a second that the house was going to keep the dog well fed with the pancakes or bacon, or eggs, but I came to the quick shock that the dog dies due to starvation.  With the people gone the house continues to go on which i find quite errie. I think the biggest thing I gained from this short story is that life still goes on with or without you or your family.  That we have created such technology that it doesn’t even need us to exist, this in a sense shows that the robots are taking over.  Overall a good read with good detailed visuals without pictures.
